Rudolstadt

ruf-landscapeSaale Rudolstadt is an ancient town at the base of Schloss Heidecksburg (Heidecksburg Castle). Heidecksburg Castle is steeped in tradition. It is located prominently on the banks of the Saale River and surrounded by a lovely German landscape.
The first German open air museum, the Thueringer Bauernhaeuser (Farm Museum), the historical city with the Schiller-House, the Old City Hall with Historical library and archive, a splendid church, a theatre and much more can be found here.

You can take a walk in the footsteps of Goethe, Schiller and other famous people.
Here in Rudolstadt Schiller met the Lengefeld-Sisters. One of them, Charlotte, he married some years later.
Here in Rudolstadt the german philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer wrote his dissertation, it even was printed in Rudolstadt.

Rudolstadt was first mentioned in 776. It received its' town charter in 1326 from the Dukes of Orlamuende and was granted to the Schwarzburgian Dukes a few years later.
Rudolstadt became the residence of the principality Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt in 1571.
